For a long time I have been meaning to volunteer for Scout and Frodo, two trail angels who house and feed thru-hikers before driving them to the southern terminus of the Pacific Crest Trail.
Today I finally got to do that!
I awoke at 5am, arrived at Scout and Frodo’s at 5:30, and at 6 I loaded up three (of the 23!) hikers in my Prius to join the caravan out to the trail. Two of my hikers (from Tennessee and Long Island) already did the Appalachian Trail, and one of them (from Los Angeles) is doing his first thru-hike.
By 7:15 we were snapping photos with all the other hikers at the monument and learning about Leave-No-Trace principles from the PCTA’s trail hosts.

I have to say, the vibe at Scout and Frodo’s was amazing — even kinder and better organized than I hoped it would be. I also signed up to do morning errands and drove two hikers from the airport to Scout and Frodo’s later in the day.
I will definitely be volunteering again. 🙂
