North Carolina Escape

9-12 October 2021

Pisgah National Forest and Blue Ridge hikes

(23 miles, +5,100/-5,100 feet).

My NYC friends Chris and Sandy spent a lot of the pandemic remotely working from North Carolina, and they love it! When they once got a sudden cancellation for a booked AirBnB, the owners offered to put them up for free some time. And that time was now! They invited our mutual friend Dan from Toronto and me to eat, drink, and (of course!) hike.

I don’t know much about the trails we actually hiked (it was nice to have local guides take care of logistics!) but they were mostly in the woods, except the last day when we got above tree line on the Art Loeb Trail. Wonderful!

Sandy and I hiked while Dan and Chris did some trail running.

Sandy

Orange gilled waxcap

Bluestem goldenrod

White wood aster

Late Purple Aster

Appalachian Mimic Millipede

One set of hikers warned us that the trail ahead was impassable.

It wasn’t

Because beer was at the other end

Lovely views

Great Friends

Perfect Day!

Striped Gentian

American Asters

My favorite trail of the trip!

I guess we’re high up?

American Mountain Ash

Watch your step

Steel Blue Cricket-Hunter Wasp

Hey, Wilderness!

Cloud shadows played on the hills

So many autumn colors!

Pisg-ahhhhhhhhh!
