Day 3: A New Trail Over Cottonwood Pass

20 May 2022
Big Whitney Meadow to Horseshoe Meadow
(7 miles, +1,500/-1,300 feet).

Although I camped in a good spot last night, I had trouble sleeping again. I feel like all of a sudden I don’t know what to do with my arms on the sleeping pad! It’s weird because usually I feel quite cozy in the tent.

Anyhoo, I was on trail by 6am to start the climb up over Cottonwood Pass. I’ve never headed this way before — usually I am heading there either from the PCT or from Horseshoe Meadow.

The climb was tough, but the air was cool and I took my time. It started to get really pretty towards the end of the climb.

And then before I knew it I was back at the iconic trail sign at the pass.

From there it was an easy 4 miles back to the car.

I only once exited via Cottonwood Pass, and that was when I got rained out. Regarding sleeping, I had that issue, too, but I opted for a wider pad (Big Agnes Insulated Q-Core SLX) and that changed everything. The edges are higher and hold my arms well. You might not need the long like me, though I don’t remember how tall you were. 🙂 Glad you’re getting out!
