This is a classic 50 mile backpacking loop in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park. I originally intended to do this hike with a meetup.com group in 2015, but life got in the way. I’m happy how it worked out, though, because I got to do the trip with Half Cookie!
We decided to start this loop from Onion Valley instead of Road’s End because it is a couple hours quicker for us to drive from San Diego to the Eastern Sierra than the Western Sierra. We also had a flexible game plan, as we originally thought we might do a there-and-back hike on the John Muir Trail up to Pinchot Pass and Lake Marjorie, depending on how we felt at the Woods Creek turnoff.
We gave ourselves 5 days to finish this trip, but we did it in 4 days and 3 nights at a moderate to fast pace:
