Coyote Canyon

15 January 2022
Lower Coyote Canyon
(6 miles, +500 / -500 feet).

We haven’t gotten much rain in Anza-Borrego this year, so sadly there will be no super-bloom. But you can still find lots of flowers near water sources, so Half Cookie and I decided to hike Coyote Creek, which flows year-round. It’s close to Borrego Springs, and the road is good enough that we could coax our Prius to the trailhead.

Here we go!
White Bursage
Thurber’s Sandpaper Plant
Spanish Needle
Fan-leaved Tiquilia
California Dodder (a parasite!)
Half Cookie makes her way upstream
Dyebush
Teddy-bear Cholla
Ouch!
Ocotillos
Silver Cholla
California Croton
Thickleaf Groundcherry
Desert Lavender
Brittlebush
Seven-spotted Lady Bug
Yuma Sandmat
Fragrant Flatsedge
Arizona Lupine
Bigelow’s Monkeyflower
Nettle-leaved Goosefoot
Spangletop
Cresote Bush
Cliffbrakes?
Narrow-leaved Cryptantha
London Rocket
Another Spanish Needle (I love these!)
Fremont’s Pincushion
Saharan Mustard
More desert lavender
Browneyes
Distant Phacelia
Yet another Spanish Needle
Emory’s Rockdaisy
Jersey Cudweed
Making our way back downstream
Sweetbush
Beetle Spurge
Redstem Stork’s-bill
Distant Phacelia
Trailing Windmills
Black-banded Rabbitbrush
Brownplue Wirelettuce
Half Cookie checks out some weird machinery rusting in the sun
Peninsular Fishhook Cactus
Teddy-bear Cholla Bloom

On our way back to the car we climbed a ridge nearby to get a view of the valley below. And there were a few new plants up here, too.

That was fun!
So nice!
California Barrel Cactus
Chuparosa
Ocotillo bloom

When we were done we headed back to Borrego Springs to the pool and our room at the Borrego Valley Inn (what a great place!).

Coyote Canyon is awesome. Just made it out there twice this winter, backpacking and exploring Cougar Canyon. So much water out there.
